(CNN Spanish) -

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro appointed cardiologist Marcelo Queiroga as the country's fourth new health minister since the pandemic last March.

“It was decided this afternoon to appoint Marcelo Queiroga.

The conversation was excellent, I have known him for a few years.

He is not a person I have known for a few days.

He has everything he needs to do a good job, following everything Pazuello has done until today, "Bolsonaro said Monday night while speaking with supporters at the presidential palace in Brasilia.

Marcelo Queiroga is the president of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology and will replace the current Brazilian Health Minister and Army General Eduardo Pazuello, who has led the ministry since May 16, 2020.

Bolsonaro added that Queiroga will choose his work team and that a transition will take place "in one or two weeks."

"Mr. Marcelo Queiroga is much more knowledgeable about the health issue, he is going to take actions to reduce the number of people who die from this disease that is affecting the entire world," said Bolsonaro.

Early Monday, Pazuello hinted that he might leave office soon, but denied he would resign.

“The president is thinking of a replacement (…) I did not ask to leave, nor will I.

It is not in my character.

When the president asks, we will make a correct transition as is tradition, ”he said.
