The best cake in Bad Kohlgrub was in the Waldschlucht café.

That's what the people say.

But since it was closed, the restaurant has been falling into disrepair.

Two brothers from Munich want to pimp it up and reopen it - with open-air theater, concerts and swimming at the pond.

Bad Kohlgrub

- My God, what enchanting stories have you heard about this place.

About the pink bouquet and its fantastic cake.

From the carp and trout.

From the first kiss to the wedding, everything was there.

You can hardly believe it, the Hahn brothers from Munich, that everyone who walks by has an anecdote to tell about Café Waldschlucht.

But these everyday adventures in the Bad Kohlgruber Forest, 15 minutes from the alder sports field, are a bit behind.

We are talking about decades, not just years.

The way the restaurant looks like at the moment, you have to say: The magic of yesteryear has fled because it couldn't stand it any longer in this ruin.

When the Hahn brothers Daniel and Julian and their large group of helpers arrived in mid-January, they experienced some shock.

Wooden beams that rot away.

Cables and pipes that have more space than any installer would like.

A toilet that floods the hallway when it flushes.

Anyone who inspects this shack cannot believe that the new tenants are really serious:

they want to open in early summer.

But yes, that's exactly what they mean.

New owners at Café Waldschlucht: Gastro brothers from Munich have already turned ship “Alte Utting” into a bar

It would have been a size smaller too.

With a few tricks you could quickly open it again, called grandfathering.

But they want

new shine in the old house

.

If anyone can do that in three or four months, it will be the gastro tinkerers from Munich with their large network of acquaintances, friends and supporters.

Daniel Hahn had the Alte Utting, a ship that used to chug across the Ammersee, towed to Munich and turned it into a bar.

His brother Julian started with a French fries stall in front of the "Pathos Transporter Theater" and sold chips that he had fetched from the Erdinger farmer the previous afternoon.

He now runs the “Hexenhäusel” on Columbus Square, among other things.

Before the question comes: yes, it really looks like a witch house.

In fact, the Waldschlucht café is based on it, with a lot of wood.

Located near a house in the woods that half the year desperately waits for sunlight.

Café Waldschlucht is being revived: New operators are restoring most of them themselves

Most, stresses Julian Hahn, “we do it ourselves”.

Otherwise they couldn't afford all of this.

It would be almost cynical to just speak of renovation.

The Hahns, Florian Jund, Philipp Behringer and a few other specials do transplants here seven days a week, it is such a

major operation

. They started with the back of the house, the operator's area.

From there they work their way forward.

To a certain extent, the lockdown helps them because they can work non-stop in Kohlgrub.

Even the friends moved into the forest ravine, with them up to the first floor.

Corona is "once a chance, once a curse,"

says Julian Hahn.

Café Waldschlucht in Bad Kohlgrub: prices that everyone can afford

The state de facto banned them from their profession a good four months ago.

You can call it courageous to build a new economy while the main income is missing.

That is only possible with your background.

The establishment of their farms is used, often old things with a big soul.

A large part snores to themselves in a warehouse, several hundred square meters with all kinds of interiors, from chairs and tables to candle holders and pianos.

You have a friend there who often clears empty apartments.

The Hahns cannot yet say exactly how the forest gorge will look in the future.

The choice is huge.

There are already a few key points.

Two acquaintances take over the business

.

Julian Hahn went to school with one of them, Charlotte Holzig.

When they recently met again, the restaurateur said she wanted to do something new, preferably with culture.

“I thought to myself: perfect,” says Hahn.

Because in future there will also be

open-air theater, small concerts and festivals

in the excursion restaurant

.

The hosts plan their menu “small, simple and tasty”.

In Munich a portion of french fries costs 3.80 euros, which is hardly more expensive in Kohlgrub.

"Prices that everyone can afford," says Julian Hahn.

The pond in front of the house - about 20 meters wide and 50 meters long - has a central role in the concept, with plants, reeds, etc.

They would like to

revive

the

swimming business

.

“I have always loved water.

I've always wanted to do something with it, ”emphasizes Julian Hahn.

That's the only reason why he let himself be changed at the crucial moment.

When brother Daniel showed him the run-down café in Kohlgrub on the Internet in 2019, he is said to have said: "Just stay away from me." Nevertheless, they drove once into the forest ravine.

"Then it was over."

Then it crashed: Garmisch-Partenkirchen's mayor Elisabeth Koch had to take serious criticism in the local council.

The failed mayoral candidate Dr.

Stephan Thiel and her constant rival Martin Sielmann beat her verbally.

And Vogel “Hansi” lived with the Nebel family in Mittenwald for five years.

But now the rare albino peacock has disappeared from its cage.
