The Christian Democratic Party in Germany, led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, recorded yesterday (Sunday) resounding losses in regional elections in two districts, ahead of the federal elections in September in which Merkel's successor will be elected.
Merkel, who has been in power since 2005, is retiring from political life and her party has already lost the "Merkel bonus" that brought her four consecutive election victories.

According to partial results, in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, one of the centers of the car industry in the country, the Green Party won 31.4% of the vote, while the Conservatives won only 23.4%.
Neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate, the Social Democratic Party received 35.5% of the vote.
The Conservatives, who led the polls until last month, ended up gaining only 26.9% support.
