Stuttgart / Mainz

- Together with party colleagues in front of the screen, eagerly anticipating the first projections *, then falling into each other's arms for joy or patting consolation on the back: all of this has been a matter of course on an election evening so far.

Because of Corona, there will be no such celebrations this year.

Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate expect an election evening in a state of emergency.

State election in Baden-Württemberg: parties are refraining from election parties due to Corona

Information on planned election parties can usually be found on the websites of the regional associations - but you will look in vain for them in 2021.

In times of mask, hygiene rules and distance requirements, there are isolated references to online election parties, for example at the district association of the Greens in Stuttgart or the AfD in Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald.

At the FDP, however, a nationwide election party is planned, live from the Berlin party headquarters with interviews with the top candidates and a panel discussion.

Also in the Stuttgart state parliament there will be significantly fewer people than usual on this Sunday evening.

A maximum of 500 people were allowed to register in the house of the state parliament.

Most of them are press representatives, according to the state administration.

But also employees of the parliamentary groups, the government, members of parliament and members of the state parliament will be on site on election evening.

Around 80 new disinfectant dispensers were set up to protect those present from the virus.

In addition, all visitors to the site are offered voluntary rapid corona tests *, by the early afternoon (as of 1:00 p.m.) 600 had already been carried out - all negative, reported a spokesman for the state parliament.

Fixed seats - at a safe distance from colleagues - are assigned to journalists in the state parliament.

Results of the state elections in Baden-Württemberg: Kretschmann and Eisenmann face the journalists

Shortly after 6 p.m. Green top candidate Winfried Kretschmann and CDU top candidate Susanne Eisenmann were expected on the premises.

There the two politicians answered journalists' questions and commented on the results.

Bunches of reporters and cameramen who usually surround the top candidates were avoided this time as well.

First projections by ZDF show: With 31.9 percent of the vote, the Greens are the clear winner of the election.

Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) was delighted with the good performance of his party.

"Greens and Baden-Württemberg - they go well together," said Kretschmann on Sunday evening in Stuttgart.

He understands the result “as a mandate to continue serving our country as Prime Minister”.

He accepted this assignment with “great gratitude and humility”.

On the other hand, the CDU experienced a catastrophic defeat - with just 23.9 percent of the vote.

CDU top candidate Susanne Eisenmann has taken responsibility for this.

"Of course I'll take the responsibility, that's a matter of course for me," she told the Phoenix news channel on Sunday evening.

It was a "disappointing and disastrous election result," said the Minister of Education.

The people in Baden-Württemberg would have wanted Winfried Kretschmann.
