(CNN Spanish) -

Depending on where in the world you are, it is likely that in a few days you will have to adjust the time on your watch due to the time change.

Approximately 70 countries have time changes around these dates: summer, if they are in the northern hemisphere, or winter, if they are in the southern hemisphere.

Many countries near the equator do not adjust their clocks.

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, in a country with a time change, around these dates you should move your watch forward one hour, and around October or November you should set it back one hour.

: The time change is coming and the clocks will go back an hour: why?

If you are in the southern hemisphere (and if your country has the time change) it would be the opposite.

These measures generally seek to optimize energy use, although they have been repealed in several countries and every year they raise debates in those that still remain.

Time change in the United States

This Sunday, March 14, the schedule in the United States changed.

Hawaii, most of Arizona, or the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa, do not change time.

Daylight saving time will continue until Sunday, November 7, 2021.

The idea of daylight saving time in the US was conceived in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin and has undergone several changes since then, according to data compiled by CNN.

In 1919 it was repealed, although it was still recognized in some areas of the country.

In 1966, the Uniform Time Act established the uniform daylight saving time system in the US, from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October, but countries could opt out.

Between 1974 and 1975, Congress extended daylight savings time to save energy during the energy crisis.

And between 1986 and 2006, it was set to begin on the first Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October, according to the CNN compilation.

But since 2007, with the George W. Bush Energy Policy Act, daylight saving time in the United States begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

Time change in Mexico

If you are in Mexico, the time change takes a few more days.

Daylight saving time begins this year in the country on Sunday, April 4, at 2 a.m.

This, except for the states of Quintana Roo and Sonora.

In case you live in the states bordering the United States, your time will change at the same time as in the northern neighbor, that is, the second Sunday in March.

Daylight saving time ends in Mexico on Sunday, October 31.

South America

On Sunday, March 28, at midnight, those who live in Chile and Paraguay will have to turn back their clocks one hour, as winter time begins.

They are the only countries in South America that continue to keep the time change in effect throughout their territory.

Although they have implemented it before, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil currently have the time change canceled.

They will not have to adjust the time.

Likewise, although in some specific moments in history the governments implemented it, if you are in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru or Bolivia, you will not change the schedule either.

Central America

Although some Central American countries sometimes used summer time, currently none has the current measure.

In other words, if you live in Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica or Panama, you will not have to adjust your clocks.

However, the decision has not yet been made.

Therefore, if you are in Spain or in another country of the European Union, on Sunday March 28 at 2 am, the clock will advance one hour.

European summer time remains until Sunday, October 31, when it will be delayed one hour.
