According to the fire department, they wanted to get a ball out of the water.

Witnesses had observed how the two with rolled up trousers had looked for a ball in the Laher pond.

Divers discovered the lifeless bodies of the children on Sunday after a long search at a depth of about six meters, reports the dpa news agency.

The boys are said to have lived in a refugee shelter nearby.

A ten-year-old girl got help after the two boys disappeared.

She is said to have played ball with the boys on Sunday on the banks of the Laher pond.

According to a spokesman, the children's shoes and jackets were still on the bank.

According to the fire department spokesman, several passers-by chose the emergency number because of the ten-year-old's cries for help.

The Laher Teich is a quarry pond in the Lahe district.
