Why France-Scotland will play well on March 26

2021-03-16T08:19:27.291Z

First opposed to this date, the Scottish federation, which after its defeat Sunday against Ireland is no longer in the race to win the Tournament, gave its agreement to the FFR. Explanations.

It's not official yet, but it shouldn't be long.

The match between France and Scotland, postponed after a wave of Covid-19 contamination among the Blues, should be held on Friday March 26 at 9 p.m. at the Stade de France.

"We are still negotiating but March 26 is the preferred date," said the organizing committee of the Six Nations Tournament on Monday.

An outcome that took time.

For several reasons.

To validate the date of the postponement, of course, the agreement of all parties is required.

Thus, before proposing that of March 26, the French Rugby Federation had to obtain the agreement of the League, representative of the presidents of the Top 14. Only that of RC Toulon, Bernard Lemaitre, was formally opposed to this new duplication, for a 20th day of the championship being contested again without the 31 internationals.

But the boss of the Var club was not followed by his peers.

Who validated this proposal by revealing the programming of this day, without a match on Friday evening in head-on competition with France-Scotland…

On the Scottish side, we favored another date, that of May 22, the weekend where the European Cup finals will be played.

With very little chance of finding a Scottish province there.

But much more one, even several, French clubs.

Why this date?

Because the presidents of the Premiership, much less fluid than their counterparts in the Top 14, refuse to release the internationals playing in the English league outside the international regulatory window.

A position that deprives the Scottish coach of a large handful of players, including his captain Stuart Hogg (Exeter), pillar Jamie Bhatti (Bath), second-row Jonny Gray (Exeter), center Chris Harris (Gloucester), the winger Sean Maitland (Saracens) or the best scorer of tries of this Tournament, the pearl Louis Rees-Zammit (Gloucester).

But the defeat of the XV du Chardon, Sunday at Murrayfield against Ireland, changed the situation.

Mathematically, Scotland can no longer seek final victory in the Six Nations Tournament.

The Celtic Federation therefore informed its French counterpart on Monday that it was no longer opposed to a postponement to March 26, agreeing to do without its internationals playing in the English league for this meeting (which could help the affairs of the Blues who, in case of success against Wales this Saturday, will then need an enhanced victory to finish in first place…).

Proof of the imminence of the officialization of this postponement date, the accreditation requests for this meeting were sent… Monday noon to the media.

On Friday March 26, kick off at 9 p.m.
