The platform will deploy new tools to limit unsolicited interactions between suspicious adult profiles and users.

Fewer private messages from strangers with shady ideas.

Instagram is setting up new protection tools for minors from this Tuesday.

This deployment of filtering options should take place over several months and complete the prevention arsenal, including the parental guide that is very often overlooked.

First project put into action, increased control of the age of users of the social network.

The Facebook group platform requires a minimum age of 13 to register.

However, it is easy to circumvent this legal obligation.

This problem affects all social networks like TikTok or Snapchat which do not require, a priori, any identity document to justify a date of birth.

Algorithms will attempt the delicate exercise of predicting the true age of a limb based on its interactions.

"To meet the challenge of age verification, we are working on artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to help us protect adolescents and implement features specific to their ages" announces the social network which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Block suspicious accounts upstream

The first feature prevents adult accounts from sending private messages to minors who do not follow it.

When they try, these accounts receive a notification that this is no longer an option.

In addition to this restriction, Instagram will increase notifications to encourage teens to be careful in their private exchanges with adult accounts.

In particular, they will receive an alert message when they speak with someone who has already been reported for questionable behavior.

An adult who frequently asks minors or bombards them with private messages will be flagged automatically.

It will then be possible to end a conversation that has already started, to block it and to denounce it.

Upstream, suspicious adult accounts will have a harder time finding and consulting underage counters.

These young members will be encouraged to switch their accounts to private mode by default in order to better control who can consult their posts or their "Reels".
