A smoke detector saved the life of an elderly man in Starnberg on Tuesday.
Firefighters kicked in the door when it didn't open.
Starnberg
- Burnt food could have killed a man over 90 years old on Tuesday in Starnberg - if he hadn't had a smoke detector in his apartment not far from the Starnberg fire station.
Craftsmen in the apartment building on Ferdinand-Maria-Straße noticed the smell of burning in the stairwell and heard the smoke alarm from an apartment on the second floor - they immediately alerted the rescue workers.
Rescue forces of the Starnberg and Söcking fire brigades around Starnberg's commander Markus Grasl heard a whimper through the door of the apartment, kicked the door down immediately and found the disabled senior in a daze. He was rescued by the fire brigade and taken to the hospital by the ambulance service with suspected smoke inhalation. Without the smoke detector, says Commander Grasl, the pot on the stove that was switched on could have set off a room fire that could have been fatal for the occupant - smoke detectors have saved a life again. The fire brigade boarded up the door so that the apartment is secured and ventilated the apartment vigorously.
