The Ministry of Environmental Protection continues to advance the insurance claim following the tar incident off the coast of Israel: An expert from an analytical laboratory in the UK, which deals with oil pollution, came to Israel this weekend to take samples of tar and examine the possibility of compensation for cleaning and treating pollution on beaches.

During the tour, samples were taken from various points on the beaches of Haifa, Netanya and Ashdod.

The purpose of the tests is to identify the oil, in order to confirm that it is indeed crude oil and to characterize its properties, origin and any other identifying detail that may link the bodies suspected of the fuel spill incident.

According to the provisions of the Liability for Compensation for Pollution Damages in Oil Law, 2004 and in accordance with the findings of the inspection, the insurance claim of the Ministry of Environmental Protection against Emerald, the polluting ship, will be promoted.

It should be noted that the International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund (1992), on behalf of which the expert came, is a global intergovernmental organization that compensates for the damage of marine pollution caused by the spillage of oil-resistant oil.

Recall that the investigation of the National Marine Environmental Protection Unit revealed that the crude oil tanker, registered in the Marshall Islands, is the suspect that polluted the shores of Israel last month.

The tanker loaded Iranian crude oil on the island of Khareg in January 2021, passed off the coast of Israel where it dumped the crude oil estimated at several tens to hundreds of tons, and continued towards Syria - where it transported oil in the middle of the sea to other ships, including a tanker carrying an Iranian flag.

Minister of Environmental Protection Gila Gamliel: "After professionals in the Marine Unit of the Ministry of Environmental Protection located the crude oil tanker that polluted the shores of Israel after an intensive investigation, in cooperation with Israeli and international bodies, we are working to claim compensation for the severe damage to Israeli shores."
