The managing director of Passionsspiele Oberammergau Vertriebs GmbH and his colleague Walter Rutz prefer to toast the success with the caffeinated drink.

On March 5, the two of them presented their concept for the “Germany Travel Mart” (GTM) to those responsible at the German National Tourist Board (DZT) - and they won them over.

"Everyone was very enthusiastic about our ideas," says Rutz, who is also the plant manager of the Kultur company.

So excited that it's official since Tuesday.

In the coming year, Oberammergau will host the largest industry get-together for the international marketing of Germany as a travel destination.


Griebler sums up his joy in one word: “Crazy,” he says.

This important sales fair will put the region in a different tourist league, he says.

Especially since the advertising value is 40 million euros.

The sustainable positioning of the Passion in the following years as well as the strengthening of regional tourism not only for the place, but for the entire district are in the foreground.

Up to 400 experts from the travel industry and around 150 media representatives are expected to exchange and inform themselves about the latest developments and products in Germany's tourism sector.

Tight program with passion and youth days

After major cities like Cologne, Dresden or Nuremberg, the event will take place in a rural area for the first time in 2022.

"Through the Passion Play, our centuries-old tradition of Herrgottschnitzer, the Lüftlmalerei and our unique tourism region in the heart of the Ammergau Alps Nature Park, we can offer a diverse repertoire of tourist opportunities that are synonymous with Bavaria and Germany around the world." Search for sponsors is going according to plan

Now it's about the financing.

The municipal council had decided to provide funds up to a maximum of 100,000 euros from the company's own culture.

Rutz and Griebler are currently looking for partners to reduce their own contribution.

The talks have so far been extremely satisfactory, says Rutz.

“Sponsors who know the GTM are enthusiastic.” They want to participate.

Griebler was only in contact with Munich Airport on Tuesday.

He also sent positive signals.

What the marketing expert explicitly emphasizes, however, are the regional top performers who see the event as a huge opportunity.

The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn (BZB) or mSE Solutions from Christian Zott, for example.

In any case, because of the reactions, Rutz is not worried that the whole thing will fail because of the money.

Rather, he believes and hopes that funding will be in place in April instead of the deadline in May.


While the plant manager was still behind the mountain with concrete ideas before the application documents were presented, Griebler is now letting the cat out of the bag.

In coordination with the BZB, for example, he is planning a workshop day on the Zugspitze, in the Sonnalpin.

“We show Germany from its highest point.” The Unterammergau Zott is also in the boat.

He personally offers media representatives a tour of the art gallery.

A special, top-class dinner is also targeted.

So that the region leaves an unforgettable impression.


Digital or "face to face"?

After the two virtual implementations of the GTM 2020 and 2021, due to the restrictions of the corona pandemic, the GTM is to take place again in normal form in 2022.
