Actually, Garmisch-Partenkirchen's application for the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2027 is only missing the approval of the local council.

But the German Ski Association has created an adversary in its own camp.

The uncertainty is great.

  • Oberstdorf could apply for the Nordic World Cup in 2027 - an idea of the German Ski Association.

  • The DSV is causing great uncertainty - especially in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

  • Some people are questioning Garmisch-Partenkirchen's application for the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2027.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

- Peter Fischer is a tough nut to crack for media professionals.

Only when it is useful to him and his cause does he allow people who do not belong to the innermost circle to look at his cards.

How deep, he alone determines.

For several months now, his job has been Garmisch-Partenkirchen's application for the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2027. A task that he has taken on for the fourth time.

The chances that he will succeed in bringing the title fights back to Werdenfelser Land after 2011 and finally setting a monument for himself have suffered a setback in the past few days.

During the Nordic World Championships in Oberstdorf, which ended on March 7th, the German Ski Association (DSV) set a topic that runs counter to the dreams of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The DSV and the Oberstdorf Organizing Committee have a renewed application, one speaks of a bonus World Cup because there were no spectators due to the corona, for 2027.

This offends fishermen, the local political caste and all those citizens of Garmisch-Partenkirchen who are in favor of a World Cup.

Discussion with important World Cup decision-makers: Fischer is silent on the content

The message of the planned Oberstdorf application caused anything but cheers in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The applicant committee sat on Wednesday, March 10th, with the top of the town hall, Mayor Elisabeth Koch (CSU), her vice Claudia Zolk (CSB) and councilor Mike Bräu (CSU), as well as the grandees of the DSV around President Franz Steinle, sports director Wolfgang Maier and Walter Vogel, head of Marketing-GmbH, met and discussed the new situation.

Fischer, still chairman of the Garmisch Ski Club, “does not want to comment on what has been said, although there is a lot to be said”.

Despite persistent inquiries, Fischer does not think of breaking his silence because every word too much threatens to weaken the application.

Others don't have these scruples.

They prefer the offensive instead of the defensive, because they know that the application is on the brink, because the DSV wants to please everyone - but especially Oberstdorf.

The minutes of the meeting ended up anonymously in the Tagblatt mailbox at the end of the week and clearly shows the position of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen parliamentary group.

Under the item “Further procedure” it says: “There is a clear position on the part of the 1st Mayoress and the SCG that an application for an Alpine Ski World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the same year as Oberstdorf is out of the question.” Also a World Cup in 2029 is not an alternative, otherwise the reduction in application costs (91,000 euros for the community) would be lost.

Ski association on World Cup application from Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen: "Still in the voting process"

While the market and the ski club are on the same wavelength, the ski association partly transmits on a different frequency.

“We are currently still in a coordination process in which we are discussing the pros and cons with all parties.

We will take the necessary time for this.

Because, of course, in addition to the respective framework conditions on site, overarching strategic considerations also have to be made, ”said Steinle when asked by the Tagblatt.

This is how a sports politician expresses himself who wants to keep all doors open.

He promises to consider openly and transparently with all those responsible "whether a double application makes sense or what an alternative timeline could look like".

A week ago, Steinle did not see a problem in entering the race with two German locations, according to "Spiegel online" - even if the risk of at least one rejection is high.

According to the protocol, the DSV is behind Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Indeed.

"The application should only be made if you can be sure of a move.

At the moment there is only one adversary with Crans Montana. ”That the market town could fall through the cracks - this is what Koch also harbors in the Tagblatt conversation.

Your calculation: With just one competitor, the chances of winning would be “50 percent.

If the DSV also enters the race with Oberstdorf, they drop to 25 percent ”.

DSV wants to involve the international ski association - the application deadline for applications for the World Cup is in April

In order to make the right decision, the DSV is planning to involve the World Ski Federation FIS, whose council decides on the World Cup awards.

“We will hold further discussions with the FIS about possible applications,” Steinle announced.

The application deadline for the World Cup in 2027 is the end of April 2021. "So we still have some time and we will use it."

The Garmisch-Partenkirchner municipal council should give its approval at the meeting on April 15th.

It is possible that the decision-making process at the DSV has not yet been completed by this date.

Koch expects a "basic discussion" about the application that the CSU has submitted.

The mayor sees the Christian Social Ranks closed, while the Greens have already announced that they will refuse their placet.

Every effort should now be made to capture the other councilors who are still undecided.

The script stipulates that there should be a joint presentation by DSV and SC Garmisch.

Videos from the World Cup in Oberstdorf are intended to address local councils and listeners "emotionally".

Application for World Ski Championships: Mayor Koch split and calls for Gudiberg as part of the concept

Mayor Koch's emotional state is ambivalent.

On the one hand, it applies to the World Ski Championships, on the other hand, her attitude is quite critical - that's what the minutes say, and that's how she confirms it herself.

She is unwilling to support everything that the bid book had foreseen for the 2025 World Cup.

She does not come out as a friend of a Kandahar arena.

This target stadium should no longer have been included in the application for 2027.

She also speaks out against holding all competitions on the Kreuzeck.

“The Gudiberg must be part of the concept.” As a reminder: The World Cup slalom slope, only a snowball's throw away from the Olympic ski stadium, was generously equipped with a lift for the 2011 World Championships - and has been in the shadows ever since, because it is only for Is used for training purposes.

However, the TV stations are pushing for all races to take place on the Kandahar.

The motives are quite selfish.

The technology would only have to be installed once.

That saves costs.

Koch's opinion on this: "We can not only be considerate of television."

Much more important to her is consideration for nature.

She hardly has any plans to intervene in the landscape; she cites Are 2019 as a shining example. A similar World Cup was held in Sweden as in 2007. Only the infrastructure and tourism have been expanded.

There was a sustainability concept at the Nordic World Cup in Oberstdorf in 2021.

“We could use that as a guide,” says Koch.

In order to be as broad as possible, it suggests an "external body in which all areas of environmental protection are represented".

That would be a successful move to involve the critics and an opportunity to host a “green” World Cup in times of climate change and to set an example.
