Despite the corona pandemic, many Germans would like to go on vacation at Easter 2021.

But where is that even possible in this country or in Europe?

The Easter holidays * are approaching and therefore usually the first vacation of the year for many Germans.

During the corona pandemic, the situation is very different: Hotels and restaurants are closed, popular travel destinations can only be visited with a negative corona test and travel warnings cause uncertainty when making bookings.

Find out here whether and where an Easter holiday in 2021 might still be possible.

Easter holiday 2021: What rules apply to traveling in Germany?

Many Germans already spent their holidays within the country's borders last year.

Especially in summer, those who love to travel have been drawn to the North or Baltic Sea and the mountains.

Instead of longer vacation trips, day trips were the order of the day.

Due to the existing travel restrictions, this will still be the trend in 2021.

However, in all probability stricter corona measures will apply in the coming Easter holidays than last year.

In general, the Federal Government appeals to the population

to refrain from traveling at home and abroad

.

In addition, the corona lockdown will continue until at least March 28th - and thus also a

ban on accommodation

.

Whether vacation with an overnight stay can take place at Easter is therefore still up for grabs.

How to proceed on the holidays will be decided by the federal and state governments at their next summit on March 22nd.

The rising incidence gives little hope for more freedom in April.

If a real holiday in Germany is not possible at Easter, there is only a day trip left.

But here, too, rules must be observed: The government still advises against unnecessary travel - including day trips.

Depending on what the situation allows at Easter, short trips might be possible.

The ADAC suggests a tour on one of the numerous

German holiday routes

, if these are nearby.

For example, the 3,000-kilometer

Deutsche Alleenstrasse

, which leads from the island of Rügen to Lake Constance, is ideal.

Another classic is the

Romantic Road

from Würzburg to Füssen, on which you can see all kinds of beautiful landscapes through Franconian wine country, Taubertal and Ries craters.

According to an evaluation of the online booking portal for holiday homes HomeToGo, Germans tend to be drawn to familiar areas at Easter: The North Sea, Baltic Sea, Bavaria and Sylt are particularly popular.

But be careful: For the vacation on Sylt *, the mayor Nikolas Häckel plans, according to the

Lübecker Nachrichten

, that travelers will soon have to present a negative PCR or rapid test.

He also wants the federal police to control entry.

Traveling abroad at Easter 2021: what is possible?

As already mentioned, the government also warns against traveling abroad.

However, vacation planning is even easier here than in Germany, as some travel destinations are starting to relax their corona measures for tourists.

The lifting of the travel warning for

Mallorca

has now even resulted in a real booking rush for the airlines *.

Entry to the Balearic Islands is now permitted with a negative PCR test that is not older than 72 hours.

In addition, those returning to Germany do not have to be quarantined or tested for the corona virus.

For the tourism commissioner of the federal government, Thomas Bareiß, this development is sad: “For me it would be difficult to imagine that holidays are possible on Mallorca, but that hotels in the Black Forest are still closed.

That would be a very bitter message. ”That is why he is now demanding that hotels in Germany also be allowed to open at Easter.

At the moment, however, it still looks like the government is watching the Germans fleeing Mallorca with horror: "

The appeal is to forego any non-essential trip,

" said government spokesman Steffen Seibert on Monday in Berlin, as the German press Agency reports.

Tourism researcher Jürgen Schmude from the University of Munich also fears a “second Ischgl”.

An appeal to citizens not to travel is not a strict ban.

That is why vacation trips abroad are not forbidden even at Easter.

However, travelers have to be prepared for having to go into a ten-day quarantine when they return.

This currently applies to everyone who comes from a risk area, high incidence area or from a virus variant area.

Depending on the federal state, the regulations can differ a little.

In addition, travelers from a high-incidence or virus variant area must present a negative corona test that is not older than 48 hours before being transported.

Anyone entering from a risk area must carry out the corona test no later than 48 hours after entering the country.

  • Mallorca

: The Balearic Islands are one of the few regions and countries for which there is currently no travel warning from the federal government.

That makes the return journey to Germany much easier.

A negative corona test that is not older than 72 hours is only required for entry.

On Mallorca, the outdoor areas of the restaurants have also been open again since the beginning of March.

Nevertheless, strict corona measures still apply - for example a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

  • Italy

: A trip to Italy is basically possible, but it is also subject to many rules.

Currently, only those who can present a negative PCR or rapid test are allowed to enter the country.

In addition, in Italy you are not allowed to travel between the different regions until March 27th.

When returning, travelers in Germany have to be quarantined because Italy is a corona risk area.

  • Austria

: A vacation in Austria is currently rather impossible.

Not only do returnees have to go into quarantine, but also when entering Austria, holidaymakers must first go into quarantine for 10 days, which can be shortened after five days at the earliest with a negative PCR or antigen test.

In addition, all travelers must register electronically beforehand and present a negative PCR or antigen test upon entry.

  • Canaries

: The corona situation in the Canaries is gradually calming down.

Nevertheless, they are still on the list of risk areas, which makes quarantine mandatory when you return.

In addition, vacationers must be able to present a negative PCR test when checking in at the hotel.

  • Croatia

    : Entry is generally permitted.

However, travelers must register with their contact details.

In addition, a negative PCR test that is not older than 48 hours must be presented.

From the perspective of the federal government, the counties of Istria, Požega-Slavonia, Bjelovar-Bilogora and Krapina-Zagorje are currently not among the corona risk areas, so that no quarantine is due when returning from these regions.

A transit through Austria is only allowed without a stopover.
