- The news came out of the blue: Last week nine ward assistants from the Tölz Asklepios City Clinic learned that they were no longer employed.

Their contracts were not renewed or terminated.

Asklepios press spokesman Christopher Horn confirms the layoffs.

“We had to give notice to four of those affected during their probationary period.

Unfortunately, we can no longer extend the fixed-term contracts for the other parties concerned. "

Ward assistants take on auxiliary activities such as distributing food or making beds.

In doing so, they provide important support for the trained staff, but do not work in patient care.

Since the introduction of the Nursing Staff Strengthening Act, according to Horn, the nursing staff has been billed directly to the health insurance companies via the nursing budget.

"However, not all occupational groups are included in the care budget," says Horn.

According to this, only trained nursing staff should be counter-financed by the payers in the future.

This affects all hospitals, regardless of whether they are public, private or non-profit.

"Against this background, the 'Asklepios Cleaning Service' can unfortunately no longer employ nine ward aids who are in the trial period or who have a fixed-term contract."

Anne Ley has been working as a ward helper at the city clinic for five years.

For the 61-year-old, the whole thing is “a mess”: “The nurses are overburdened anyway, now this help is being denied them, and that in times of Corona.

They were all called together last week.

“Nobody had any idea what could happen.” Then they were told that the health insurance companies would no longer pay and that the jobs would be cut with immediate effect.

All colleagues with fixed-term contracts would have had to sign their terminations on site.

She herself has a permanent contract.

In a conversation with the supervisor, she was told that she could either switch to the cleaning crew or register for training as a nursing assistant from September.

“The offer is a cheek.” Many of those affected are over 60 years old and for various reasons would no longer want to start training - especially since there is no guarantee of an apprenticeship position.

Those who accept neither one nor the other have been advised to resign.

Asklepios: More than 40 new hires made

Clinic spokesman Horn says: “We don't force anyone to quit.

On the contrary, we are always ready to hire more qualified nurses and have hired many more qualified nurses in the past 18 months than we are currently reducing ward workers. ”There were over 40 new hires in this area, and more are to follow.

He sees the guilt with the policy, which did not take into account all employees involved with the nursing staff strengthening law.

At the time of the draft law, Asklepios criticized this and made it publicly known.

It is a clear step backwards, since the mix of qualifications used so far works well and "our service staff are an important and valuable part of our clinic".

In his view, this “unbalances a well-functioning system of division of labor”.

Hospitals and their employees would be left in the lurch by politicians and health insurers in the pandemic.

This hits hospitals in a challenging situation.

"While we are maintaining our supply structures for the time after the pandemic, we are currently struggling with a decline of around 15 to 20 percent of our patient numbers compared to the pre-Corona period."

Verdi: "Responsible action looks different"

The Verdi union, on the other hand, gives Asklepios responsibility and sharply criticizes the approach.

“The clinic used to be able to save money by employing the ward staff who do important work in a service company and paying them poorly,” says union secretary Win Windisch.

Now the Service GmbH is no longer worthwhile, the employees are simply dismissed.

Above all, it is incomprehensible why Asklepios has made further training as a nursing assistant possible at other locations with continued payment of wages - but not in Bad Tölz.

Asklepios did not comment on this by the time of going to press.
