Israel and the United States revealed an almost identical intelligence picture in the first round of strategic talks on Iran's nuclear issue - they told Walla!

Israeli officials involved in the contents of the talks, details of which are currently being published.

In the round of discussions, which began last Thursday, senior officials from both sides put all their intelligence information on Tehran's nuclear program on the table.

The strategic talks between Jerusalem and Washington on the issue were renewed against the background of the Biden administration's attempts to return to dialogue with Iran on the nuclear agreement.

The goal was to find out what the disagreements were between Israel and the United States on the issue and to begin coordinating positions.

On the Israeli side, the first goal was to align with the Americans regarding the intelligence picture of the Iranian nuclear program.

The first round of talks took place on March 11.

The U.S. team was led by United States President Joe Biden's National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

The Israeli team was led by National Security Adviser Meir Ben Shabbat.

Due to Corona's limitations the meeting took place in a secure video call.

"It will be a roller coaster ride"

There was broad agreement between the two teams on the intelligence picture of the Iranian nuclear issue, on the Iranian violations of the nuclear agreement and on the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency's level of oversight is declining.

Senior Israeli officials noted that Sullivan and his team presented their dilemmas regarding the continuation of the dialogue with Iran.

The Americans have admitted that contacts with Iran are stuck in the meantime.

"We are aligned in terms of intelligence. There are small nuances but in general Americans see the data as us," said one senior official.

"The talks were good but this is just the beginning of the process. It will be a roller coaster ride."

The White House declined to comment on anything other than the official announcement made at the end of the meeting that "both sides have emphasized their intention to act together against the threats in the region and have agreed to continue the strategic consultations."

Israeli officials said Israel was playing on time and hoped the Iranians would continue to reject US attempts to open a dialogue.

According to them, every day that American sanctions remain in place and the pressure continues, it increases the chance that the Iranians will blink first.

Israeli officials said one of the decisions in last week's discussions was to set up a special joint Israeli-US team that would focus solely on sharing intelligence on the Iranian issue to make sure both sides continue to hold the same intelligence picture.
