Soon, students of all ages will be able to test themselves for Corona twice a week.

Teachers 'and parents' associations are skeptical of the concept.

Munich - It is the method of choice when it comes to regaining some normalcy in the pandemic *: the corona test.

For a good two weeks now, the Corona rapid tests * have been available for everyone across Bavaria in pharmacies and retailers.

Free rapid tests in schools are also intended to help increase the safety of students.

But teachers and parents' associations sharply criticize the concept of the Ministry of Culture.

Corona self-tests: Children who tested positive must be isolated

The Bavarian Ministry of Culture provides that children of all grades can be tested twice a week with a nasal swab under the guidance of teachers.

If the test result is positive, the affected children or adolescents should be isolated.

Further steps would then have to be taken.

However, the tests should take place on a voluntary basis.

The Realschullehrerverband was not very enthusiastic about this on Wednesday (March 17th).

“Classrooms are not test centers.” The Philologists' Association (bpv) complained that the concept of the Ministry of Culture “is based on an ideal situation that will hardly exist in reality.” The chairman of the bpv, Michael Schwägerl, said: “If there is Teachers are otherwise not even allowed to provide schoolchildren with a plaster or a headache pill, from the perspective of the bpv it is incomprehensible that the task of organizing, evaluating and disposing of the tests should now be in the hands of the schools and teachers. "

What do you think of the self-tests in Bavarian schools?

Corona self-tests: Ministry of Culture defends itself against the allegations

The Bavarian Parents' Association particularly criticized the isolation of the children who tested positive.

It is also surprising that "suddenly the children's personal rights no longer seem to play a role if, after a positive result, one is' separated 'in front of the eyes of the classmates, as described in the implementation instructions." The parents' association had also expressed the fear that the smears are carried out by “unknown people” and not by the children themselves.

The Ministry of Education has now refuted this claim in a press release.

The association was also accused of unnecessarily spreading fears in the school family.

The self-tests are always carried out by the students themselves, regardless of age, according to the Ministry of Culture.

Teachers would only supervise.

They would only “verbally instruct the children and adolescents, for example by providing age-appropriate information and explanations on how to carry out the self-tests (e.g. by using the explanatory video)”, according to the communication.

The Ministry of Culture also referred to the positive experiences in Austria.

There, comprehensive self-tests would have led to more safety in schools.
