Two EU diplomats stated on March 17 that the EU reached an agreement on the same day to decide to sanction China on human rights issues. This is the first time Brussels has imposed sanctions on China since the Tiananmen incident in 1989.
Reuters quoted EU diplomats as saying that Chinese officials were suspected of infringing on the human rights of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. European, U.S., and Canadian authorities are very concerned about the situation of Uyghurs. Therefore, each member state agreed to impose sanctions on four Chinese individuals and one entity, including a ban on entry. And freeze assets.
The sanctions list will be announced after the foreign ministers of the EU member states officially approve it on March 22. Although the sanctions are symbolic in nature, they have already reflected the EU's tough stance on China.
An EU diplomat pointed out that it is necessary to impose restrictions on those who seriously violate human rights. In addition to the group of Chinese, the sanctions list also includes officials from Russia, North Korea, Libya and South Sudan.
After the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, the EU banned the export of armaments to China, and the sanctions are still in force today.
Regarding the new round of EU sanctions, the Chinese representative to the EU has called on Brussels to think twice, stressing that the parties should have dialogue instead of confrontation, and threatened to accompany them to the end if there is no other way.
