China is opening its doors to foreign nationals from about 20 countries - but only if they have been vaccinated against the corona virus by a locally produced vaccine.

The move raises questions about the motive behind this demand, given the fact that Chinese vaccines have not been approved in those countries, including the United States and Israel.

Beijing has banned most flights to its territory during the epidemic, and their renewal is necessary for the recovery of China and the world economy.

Many countries are discussing the creation of flight bubbles between them or green passports that will gain mutual recognition, in light of the progress of vaccination campaigns.

Among the countries whose citizens can come to China are the United States, Israel, Australia, India, Iraq, Thailand, Pakistan and the Philippines, but in many of them only Western-made vaccines have been approved for use.

In addition, all those coming to China must undergo corona testing and enter a period of isolation.

Among the countries that use Chinese vaccines are the Philippines, Thailand and Iraq.

Following early criticism and innovation regarding vaccines developed by China due to a lack of information from the trials, there is now broader consensus regarding their use, despite the large gaps between their reported efficacy rates.

China has so far approved five vaccines for the general population or for emergency use, and three of them have been distributed to other countries through trade or aid deals, in what is described as "vaccine diplomacy" to strengthen China's position in Asia, Africa and South America.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman denied yesterday that the regulations were intended to encourage other countries to approve Chinese vaccines.
