Aged 57 and winner of the Sakharov Prize of the European Parliament which rewards human rights defenders, Nasrin Sotoudeh returned to prison in early December after having been granted an exit permit of less than a month for treatment, in the midst of a pandemic coronavirus.
The new exit permission was granted to him on the occasion of the Iranian New Year (Nowruz), which Iranians celebrate this year on March 20.

According to her lawyers, she was then told that she had been sentenced to five years in prison in absentia for espionage.
