"My employees and I know the district better than anyone by now," says Roland Werb.

He is the managing director of the Corwese company based in Seefeld.

The district of Starnberg has entrusted the company with the task of carrying out an independent measurement of network coverage in the entire district.

The aim is to map the mobile network and identify underserved areas.

Seefeld - For this purpose, employees of the Corwese company have been driving down almost all drivable roads in the district with a special measuring vehicle for about four weeks.

"We are on almost all roads, so we have seen every corner of the district," said Werb in an interview with the Starnberg Merkur.

Inside the vehicle there are measuring devices that scan the mobile network every second.

The availability of the network services GSM, UMTS and LTE is measured in the respective common cellular networks (Telekom, Vodafone, Telefonica).

“Based on the measurement data, we then divide the district into squares with an edge length of 150 meters,” explains Werb.

"As soon as a service is not available in 15 percent of such a square, this area is considered undersupplied." The network expansion in these areas is then eligible for funding as part of the funding program for closing radio gaps in the Free State of Bavaria.

The district is aware of the importance of good network coverage.

"Comprehensive mobile phone coverage is now one of the standard needs of private individuals and businesses," emphasizes District Administrator Stefan Frey.

It is particularly important that the measurement is carried out from a neutral point and that one does not rely on the statements of the network operator.

“Good coverage is an important topic not only for private individuals, but also for companies, which is why the gwt business development agency is involved in this project,” adds Annette von Nordeck, business development manager.

In May, Werb expects a meaningful result of the measurement: “The measurement generates huge amounts of data.

We then have to evaluate these and make them presentable.

It takes a lot of time, ”he explains.

The next steps in network expansion will then be discussed on this basis.
