Paris, capital of the theft of cars and two-wheelers

2021-03-17T09:29:26.089Z

Paris represents more than 30% of some 35,000 vehicle thefts in Ile-de-France in 2020. And in almost half of the cases, these last ones

A special year also for delinquency.

With the health restrictions, she suffered a serious setback.

Thefts of vehicles, cars and two-wheelers are no exception to the rule.

In Ile-de-France, 34,680 thefts were recorded by the ministry in 2020 against 39,836 in 2019.

The Paris region remains the most affected by this phenomenon since it alone concentrates 28.6% of the thefts recorded in France and has the highest loss rate (5.9 thefts per 1,000 vehicles).

In Ile-de-France, nearly 6 vehicles out of 1000 are stolen, which is almost twice as many as in the 2nd region, in PACA (3.8 / 1000), according to exclusive figures from the Coyote Flight Observatory Secure (vehicle tracking system), based on operations carried out by Coyote, official data from the Ministry of the Interior and completed by the group of insurers ARGOS.

And it is in Paris that thieves are most active.

The high proportion of two-wheelers in circulation in the capital would also partly explain why most flights are located within the city walls.

31% of the 34,680 thefts of vehicles in Ile-de-France (cars, motorcycles and scooters) took place in Paris.

Behind, we find Val-de-Marne (15%), Hauts-de-Seine (13%), Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-d'Oise (10%), Essonne (9% ), Seine-et-Marne (7%) and Yvelines (6%).

"These figures can also be explained because in the inner suburbs, people have a box or a garage in their home, which makes access to the vehicle more difficult for thieves", estimates Jérôme Arnac, marketing and communication director at Coyote Secure.

The number of vehicles in circulation according to the Ile-de-France departments also distorts these statistics a little, which is why, compared to 1000 vehicles, the loss rate is more reliable.

Paris remains in the lead with 11.8 flights per 1000 vehicles, ahead of Val-de-Marne (6.23 / 1000), Val-d'Oise (6.05 / 1000), Hauts-de-Seine ( 6.02 / 1000), Seine-Saint-Denis (5.99 / 1000), Yvelines (5.54 / 1000), Essonne (3.47 / 1000).

Seine-et-Marne has a loss rate of (2.3 / 1000), so nearly 5 times less than in Paris!

A "catching up" of flights after confinement

"In Ile-de-France, there are real networks and a real demand on the part of receivers, we are not only on the theft of opportunity, said a commissioner from Paris.

Moreover, when a stolen car or two-wheeler is found, there are often other stolen vehicles nearby.

"

The figures bear witness to the activity of these sectors.

During confinement in March-April 2020, the number of thefts fell: -48% in March 2020 compared to March 2019 and -74% in April 2020. “No one was in the streets, just moving around could seem suspicious” , relates this same police commissioner.

But to fulfill the orders, a catch-up therefore took place as soon as the summer holidays were returned and the health restrictions were lifted: + 109% of flights in September 2020 compared to September 2019. And + 95% in October 2020!

Sectors established in particular in Seine-Saint-Denis (23.6%) and in Val-de-Marne (22.7%), the two departments which together account for nearly half of the vehicles stolen in Ile-de -France and recovered by the police (10.5% in Paris and Val-d'Oise, 9.7% in Hauts-de-Seine, 8.4% in Essonne, 5.9% outside Ile-de-France and in particular in the ports of Le Havre and Antwerp, then 4.2% in Seine-et-Marne and 3.4% in Yvelines).

97% of two-wheeler thefts are carried out with an electronic box

Among the Coyote Secure vehicles stolen in 2020 in Ile-de-France, 61.2% are two-wheelers (30.6% of private vehicles and 8.2% of professional vehicles).

According to the police headquarters, which also puts forward its figures, relatively close to those of Coyote Secure, in intramural Paris for example, 1,774 thefts of cars and freight vehicles were recorded in 2020 (-21% compared to 2019 ) and 4,870 thefts of motorized two-wheelers were recorded in 2020 (-23.4%).

"It's faster to dismantle than a car, easier to start, to transport, we can put 40 in a container for abroad or four in a van, and above all a new model sells nearly 10,000 euros ”, we announce to the bikers' mutual.

97% of thefts of two-wheelers are carried out by starting from the electronic box and by removal: the machine is lifted by hand and loaded into a truck or placed on an electric scooter to be hidden elsewhere.

Immediately after the theft, 43% of these two-wheelers are put in a cellar for a few days, to "dry", that is to say on standby, in order to check that they are not equipped with a. tracing system.

"The three most stolen models in 2020 are still the Yamaha Tmax, the Honda X-ADV, and the BMW GS," says the Mutuelle des motards.

Gear that is now difficult to insure without a prohibitive price.

Stolen, they are intended for the French market as a spare part or sold as a block abroad.

Many machines go to Africa because there are few dealers there.

"

"The best solution to avoid the theft of a two-wheeler remains the same as twenty years ago," said the Mutual.

You have to attach your two-wheeler to a fixed point.

And even have two locks when you're away for a long time.

As with cars, manufacturers have removed the keys and provided owners with electronic cards, but this makes it easier for thieves thanks to the boxes sold for 1000 or 1500 euros.
