Damascus - Sana

Many studies have concluded that eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables improves the immune function of the body, in contrast to a diet rich in processed foods and sugars, which can reduce the capabilities of the immune system and its mechanism of action to prevent infection.

Internal and infectious diseases specialist Dr. “Boutros Nasrallah” explained to SANA that eating large amounts of sugar affects various organs and systems of the body, including the immune system, as it becomes weak and loses its ability to deal with germs or pathogens.

Dr. Nasrallah recommended the need to reduce sugar intake, especially during this period with the spread of the Corona pandemic, to maintain the health of the immune system and at all times, because avoiding sugars contributes to controlling blood sugar and reducing weight and thus protecting the heart and lungs from the stress caused by obesity.

In turn, internal diseases specialist Dr. "Akram Risha" in a similar conversation said that maintaining the health of the immune system requires in addition to reducing sugar intake, eating balanced foods, especially fruits, vegetables and fibers, exercising regularly and avoiding smoking, explaining that the global recommended amount for sugar intake is about 25 grams. Daily.

Last Friday, the Ministry of Health launched the Week Without Sugar Challenge campaign to raise awareness of its health risks.
