Digital proof of vaccination should soon be possible in the EU.

The EU Commission hopes to overcome the travel restrictions in the European Union.

Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen presented corresponding plans at a press conference on Wednesday.

"With this digital certificate we want to help our member states to restore freedom of movement responsibly and safely," she said in Brussels.

The planned certificates are intended to serve as proof of whether an EU citizen has been vaccinated or tested or has recovered from Covid-19 disease.

All 27 EU countries should mutually recognize these certificates, said the Commission President.

"Digital Green Certificate"

The EU Commission calls the planned vaccination certificate "Digital Green Certificate".

The vaccination certificate should be available both digitally and in paper form.

It should be free.

The central point is a QR code that is supposed to guarantee the security and authenticity of the certificate.

Vaccinations, but also the results of PCR tests or rapid antigen tests can be recorded.

The Commission wants to develop a technical platform so that the certificates can be checked and recognized in all EU countries.

However, no personal data should be stored or exchanged on this platform, as the authority further announced.

In principle, it should be left to the EU states which advantages are granted when traveling with the certificate, for example.

However, if you continue to request quarantine or tests from holders of the certificates, you would have to report this to the EU Commission and all other EU countries and explain the reasons.

The European Commission wants the digital European vaccination card to be ready by June 1st.

It could thus enable trips to the summer vacation, as EU Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas said before the official presentation of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung".
