5G is launched in Paris this Friday.

SFR and Orange are kicking off the new generation of intramural mobile telephony.

Seen from the telecoms window, the capital looked like a besieged fortress.

The neighboring cities have all their 5G antennas for several weeks.

Under pressure from some elected officials, the City of Paris preferred to postpone the launch.

A citizens' convention has been put in place, the mobile telephony charter has been revised, consultations have been carried out between operators and elected officials.

These discussions enabled the different parties to reach an agreement.

Operators have made commitments on recycling mobile terminals, committing to collect used devices in their Parisian stores.

They had started to do so, but will strengthen their collection system.

They also undertake to respect power thresholds for their antennas that are much lower than the maximum authorized standards.

If the operators claim to be "

ready for several months

", and have several hundred 5G compatible sites, only 80 sites per operator will be activated.

Not that companies are suddenly timid, but for practical reasons.

The Mobile Telephony Concertation Commission (CCTM), a body specific to the City of Paris, validates the operators' files for 5G antennas per packet of 40. However, since the signing of the mobile telephony charter, the March 15, giving the green light to the launch of 5G from the town hall of Paris, two CCTMs were held on March 16 and 18.

"

We are going to cover 80% of the Parisian population

", specifies Grégory Rabuel, Managing Director of SFR, estimating that consumers will quickly take hold of this new technology, intended to make Internet connections more fluid in mobility.

A quarter of our in-store sales relate to 5G offers.

Consumers who renew their smartphone opt for devices compatible with 5G, to be ready when it is there,

”says the boss of SFR.

This anticipation is also linked to the desire of customers to keep their phones longer.

SFR and Orange have chosen to switch on 5G antennas using the 3.5 GHz frequency, "in

order to offer our customers the advantages linked to this new technology

", adds Grégory Rabuel, CEO of SFR.

Orange is deploying 5G where there is a need to better support the evolution of French consumption patterns, in a responsible and reasoned manner,

” explains Laurence Thouveny, director of Orange Île de France.

If Paris joins the cohort of cities already covered by 5G, others are still reluctant to take the plunge.

Lille thus plays in the Gallic village.

The City Council prefers to wait for the opinion of the health agency (Anses), expected in the coming weeks, before authorizing the operators to start carrying out the necessary work to be able to deploy 5G.

Lille businesses and consumers who are waiting for the new generation of mobile telephony will no doubt have to wait a few more months.

On the other hand, the lines are moving in Nantes, which could switch to the camp of the cities covered as early as April.
