The corona vaccine Sputnik V, officially available as Gam-COVID-Vac, is already approved in 50 countries.

It is a vector vaccine based on two types of adenovirus that are harmless to humans.

St. Petersburg - The Sputnik V corona vaccine was government registered on August 20, 2020.

As of March 2021, it is approved in around 50 countries around the world.

An EU approval was still being examined at this point in time.

The vaccine is based on the combination of two adenoviruses that carry the gene of a central component of the coronavirus.

Sputnik V: Who produces the corona vaccine?

In 2020, Sputnik V was the world's first corona vaccine to be approved.

The vaccine is produced by the Russian pharmaceutical company Biocad based in St. Petersburg.

Biocad is one of the largest companies in the industry in Russia.

The drug portfolio comprises around 60 drugs, 25 are currently in clinical studies (as of March 2021).

Biocad focuses primarily on the development of active ingredients for cancer therapy.

The company has around 2,500 employees worldwide.

In addition to Russia, it has offices in Brazil, China, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates.

Biocad's CEO is Dmitry Morozov.

Sputnik V: Approvals worldwide

On March 19, 2020, Biocad announced in a press release that it would start research into a vaccine against the novel coronavirus.

Animal experiments should therefore take place in April 2020.

In August 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the release of the drug.

First, according to Russian authorities, individual population groups, including doctors and teachers, should receive the corona vaccine.

At this point in time, the final phase 3 studies were still pending.

In addition to Russia, Sputnik V was approved in around 50 other countries by March 2021.

A selection:

  • Argentina (December 23, 2020)

  • Belarus (December 29, 2020)

  • United Arab Emirates (January 21, 2021)

  • Tunisia (January 30, 2021)

  • Lebanon (February 5, 2021)

  • Bahrain (February 10, 2021)

  • Egypt (February 24, 2021)

  • Jordan (March 10, 2021)

  • Morocco (March 10, 2021)

According to reports from Russia, the corona vaccine will also be produced in Germany.

EU approval is still pending as of March 15, 2021.

At the beginning of March, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) started a rapid test procedure.

For one of the two necessary cans, a price of around 9.60 euros is due.

Sputnik V: mode of action of the vaccine

Sputnik V is a vector vaccine.

Fragments of the spike protein genes of the coronavirus are converted into weakened viruses that are harmless to humans.

In the case of Sputnik V, there are two modified adenoviruses (cold viruses): type 26 is used for the first dose, type 5 for the second.

By using two types of virus, a possible immunity to the vector, i.e. the adenovirus, is to be circumvented.

When the virus genes get into the human body, they begin to produce the virus protein, and as a result, antibodies are formed.

This should prevent severe courses of the disease COVID-19.

The first “Prime” vaccination triggers a response from the human immune system by producing antibodies.

The second “Boost” vaccination is intended to intensify this effect.

The two doses should be administered 21 days apart.

Study data on Sputnik V were not disclosed.

Until March 2021, scientists could therefore not exactly determine the degree of effectiveness.

According to a study by the medical journal Lancet, the corona vaccine has an effectiveness of 91.6 percent.

According to other voices, however, the data situation is controversial.

Sputnik V: possible side effects

According to the Lancet, the corona vaccine is safe.

The following undesirable consequences can occur immediately after the administration of Sputnik V:

  • Skin irritation at the injection site

  • a headache

  • Exhaustion

  • Symptoms of a flu-like infection

In the completed phase 2 study, no participants showed any serious side effects.

Phase 3 started in September 2020.
