After the state elections, the SPD, Greens and FDP began exploratory talks in Rhineland-Palatinate about a new traffic light coalition.

"The talks started this week," said SPD spokesman Timo Haungs on Thursday morning.

He did not give details of the focus, the location and the dates.

SPD country chief Roger Lewentz had announced after the election that the content-related points would first be discussed, and then departmental design and personnel.

If possible, the SPD in Rhineland-Palatinate wants to pass the coalition agreement at its party congress on May 2nd, the Greens are planning on May 15th for this.

The new state parliament is constituted on May 18.

The SPD emerged victorious from the state elections on Sunday with Prime Minister Malu Dreyer.

The traffic light coalition of the SPD with the FDP and the Greens, which has ruled since 2016, could continue.
