Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin today (Friday), saying US President Joe Biden's remarks were "inappropriate and unacceptable".

Biden called Putin a murderer, and in response Russia returned the ambassador from the United States for consultations and she demanded an apology.

Erdogan has yet to receive a phone call from Biden, who sharply attacked the Turkish president throughout the election campaign.

The United States and Turkey are both members of NATO, but relations have strained in recent years following the repression of the opposition in Turkey, its military operations in Syria and elsewhere and its activities in the eastern Mediterranean.
