Munich - Airports are currently a sad sight.

Only a few business travelers are out and about in the wide corridors, the counter halls seem deserted in many places.

The current quarantine rules restrict air travel, the airlines reduce their offers to the most necessary connections.

But that could change soon: The federal government, states and associations are probably planning to make things easier for air travelers.

Instead of quarantine, negative corona tests should be mandatory for travelers from certain areas.

Corona pandemic: Airlines report record losses

The corona measures are also having a hard time on the aviation industry.

Lufthansa alone, Europe's largest airline, reported a loss of 6.7 billion euros in 2020. In addition to the airlines, travelers should also benefit from the planned relief.

According to the draft of a working group made up of federal ministries, country representatives and associations, travelers from simple risk areas should be able to avoid quarantine with a simple negative corona test upon entry in the future.

Approved antigen tests should also be allowed to be used for this purpose.

In this scenario, the results should be uploaded immediately to the previous digital entry registration, as can be seen from a paper that was presented to the dpa on Friday.

For entries from high-incidence areas, the draft provides for an exemption from self-quarantine after five days if a second negative test is uploaded for entry registration.

The first test must be available before entering the country.

For areas in which the virus mutant rages, the quarantine should, however, continue to be 14 days without the possibility of "free testing".

In addition, the establishment of so-called "flight corridors" is proposed.

It is not yet a foregone conclusion that the draft will also be implemented.

Further consultations are pending.

Travel during Corona: Country bosses irritated by travel restrictions

Last Friday, the federal government removed Mallorca from the list of high-risk areas.

As a result, the airlines recorded a sharp increase in bookings, as many German citizens want to spend their Easter holidays abroad.

Manuela Schwesig (SPD), Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is bothered by the Federal Government's decision.

She has spoken out in favor of making holidays in her own country possible under strict conditions.

“Nobody understands that the Mallorca vacation is being preferred to vacationing in one's own country for epidemiological reasons,” she said on Friday morning on Deutschlandfunk.

Instead, the Prime Minister suggested “contactless holidays” in their own country.

In an interview with

Bild

, the Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff (CDU), had spoken out in favor of a similar model.

The federal and state governments will probably discuss opening plans for hotels in Germany on March 22nd.

On Friday, the topic of vaccination is first on the agenda of a round with Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Prime Minister.
