Jean-Marc Egly: "Covid-19, the defeat of French research"

TRIBUNE -The biochemist and geneticist, research director at Inserm, member of the Academy of Sciences and professor at the National Taiwan University, analyzes the ailments suffered by medical research in France and which prevent it from standing out in the global fight against the pandemic.

Rather than declaring the bankruptcy of French research that we saw shine not so long ago, let's try to understand why France could not play the leading role in the fight to stop this pandemic.

The current health crisis reveals the malaise of French research, pointing to the flaws in its organization, funding, governance and monitoring.

Research has never really interested our governments.

Certainly, certain actions have been undertaken, such as the creation of the National Research Agency in 2005, the Research and Higher Education Evaluation Agency (Aeres) in 2006, transformed into HCERES in 2013, the investments for the future in 2010 and recently the research programming law.
