2021-03-20T02:01:29.792Z

Immigration officials value this avenue of relief after 1,000 more migrants, mostly unaccompanied minors, crossed the Rio Grande on Friday. Facilities on the Mexican border are overloaded. The Government also announced that it will enable two additional ports of entry for migrants from the 'Stay in Mexico' program.

U.S. immigration authorities have requested planes to transport migrant families and children to states near the Canadian border and process them there, due to the dramatic spike in the arrival of asylum seekers across the southern border in recent weeks, two officials said. from the Department of Homeland Security to

The Washington Post.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requested air support from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after 1,000 migrants - many of them unaccompanied minors - crossed the Rio Grande on Friday in the morning, making it more difficult to find facilities to house them, according to the newspaper.

CBP has

yet to determine which states along the Canadian border could receive the flights.

It wouldn't be the first time the federal agency has used planes to transport migrants from one location to another: ICE planes have been used in recent days to transport asylum seekers from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas - where the facilities are located. they've run out of space — to the El Paso area.

The news comes amid the unprecedented arrival of migrants to the southern border, mostly unaccompanied children.

Most of them are detained in the Rio Grande Valley, the epicenter of the drastic increase.

Although the Biden government has avoided describing the situation on the border as a crisis, it has admitted that it is being "challenging" to find humane solutions to the mass arrival.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) currently houses more than 9,500 migrant children in its facilities, while CBP houses about 4,500.

Many of these facilities were not built to house minors and not to shelter people for long periods of time.

While authorities are returning most of the migrants arriving at the border and Biden has asked them "not to come," they are admitting a growing number of minors without their parents.

In all, some 14,000 minors who traveled alone to the United States are currently in federal custody, government sources said Thursday.

More than 500 of those minors are having to remain in custody three times the time established by law, NBC News, the sister network of Noticias Telemundo, reported Thursday.

The minors have been detained for more than 10 days, much longer than the legal limit of three days, and are sleeping in overcrowded conditions.

Two additional ports of entry for migrants from the 'Stay in Mexico' program

The Biden Administration not only has the challenge of solving the dilemma of the massive arrival of asylum seekers in recent weeks, but that of hundreds of migrant families who have been waiting for months on the Mexican side for a solution to their asylum cases, then that they were returned there under the Trump Administration by the 'Stay in Mexico' program, officially called Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP, in English).

DHS said in a statement Friday that the United States will designate two additional ports of entry to facilitate the entry of these migrants, in addition to the three ports it has already established.

"Beginning next week, after virtually registering and passing a COVID-19 test at assigned sites in Mexico, approved individuals with active MPP cases will be processed at the

port of entry

. Shortly thereafter, the DHS will also initiate processing through the port of entry in

Laredo, Texas

, "the agency said.

People with active MPP cases must virtually register at https://conecta.acnur.org and "stay where they are to await further instructions."

The agency said that once they are tested and tested negative for COVID-19, the migrants are transported to a designated port of entry.

In February, the Biden Administration announced the virtual registration process for individuals with active MPP cases that were returned to Mexico.

So far, there were three designated ports of entry:

San Diego, California (San Ysidro)

,

El Paso, Texas (Paso del Norte),

and

Brownsville, Texas (Gateway International Bridge).

The agency clarified that it is not enough to show up at the border to be admitted, but that it is necessary to register online beforehand.

"Anyone who tries to cross the border illegally puts themselves and their families at risk," the statement said.

"Only people with active cases under MPP are eligible to register in this process. No one should believe the traffickers or others who claim that the border is open."
