In the video: Everything you need to know when you want to issue a Portuguese passport (Walla! NEWS Studio)
The possibility of obtaining Portuguese citizenship has in recent years become especially enchanting for many Israelis, as it gives them the ability to live and work in EU countries.
But what to watch out for if you want to enter the process of obtaining Portuguese citizenship?
Lawyer Adam Friend came to the studio to explain.
During the Corona period there were publications, including yours, according to which Portugal was considering ceasing to grant citizenship to descendants of deportees.
where does it stand?
"There were two bills that talked about tightening the conditions, but the law is not going to change. But the reasons why they wanted to tighten remained and are mainly discounted advertising of Portuguese citizenship. For example, advertising in Israel and Turkey, of certain companies, lowers Portugal and its citizenship. As a product, the Portuguese claimed that it harmed their dignity as a country. "
So what's going to happen?
"At the level of regulations there will be some toughening and the consulates are going to better monitor this issue. Anyone who publishes improperly will get a request from the consulate or the Portuguese government."
Is there a commitment to live there for a certain period of time to become a citizen?
"No. You have to prove that you are descendants of deportees and apply to the Ministry of Justice and the Population Authority in Portugal and submit an application. The process usually takes two years, so if an advertiser says that the process can be shortened, be careful. I do not think everyone needs professional guidance. Learn the process and do it yourself, but it takes time, because you have to learn and run around. If you have time and your portfolio is simple - you can do it yourself. If not, give it to someone with experience and proof of success. One and a few adult customers receive citizenship. "
What should you be careful about in the process?
"I think it is very important to go to a lawyer with experience. To get a passport or ID card, you need biometric samples. No one can bring someone a passport. What we can give is a citizenship appendix, a certificate stating that the applicant is a Portuguese citizen. I recommend to my clients "Wait for the corona to pass, fly to Portugal and issue an identity card and passport, because anyone who wants to make an appointment at the consulate today will receive a summons two years ahead."
