The results of the elections to the 24th Knesset are not yet known, but from the moment the polls close, the hourglass begins for each of the stages until the new coalition is formed.

Once the election results are official and final, and at the end of eight days from the election day, i.e. March 31, 2021, they will be handed over to the President by the Central Election Commission, Supreme Court Justice Uzi Vogelman. The president now has seven days to hold consultations. To make a decision on which candidate will entrust the craft of assembling the government.

The Member of the Knesset to whom the President has entrusted the task of forming a government has 28 days to form a government.

The President may extend the period by an additional 14 days.

If the period given to the elected candidate has passed and he has not been able to form a government, he has informed the president that he cannot form a government or a government has been presented and the Knesset has rejected the request to express confidence in it, the president has two options.

This is how Israel will reach a fifth election

The first option, to impose the craft of assembling the government on another candidate who has announced that he is willing to do so.

In this case, he has another 28 days to work.

The other possibility is that the president will inform the speaker of the Knesset who does not see the possibility of forming a government.

If the second option exists, and the president informs the speaker of the Knesset that he does not see the possibility of forming a government, imposes on the second MK the task of forming a government and he also failed to form a government, the other candidate informed the president that he could not form a government. Express confidence in it - A majority (61) of the Knesset members may ask the President in writing to impose the position on a candidate of their choice - within 21 days.

If such a request is made, the president must assign the position to the MK specified in the request within two days, and the same candidate is given 14 days to form the coalition.

If an application is not submitted by a majority of the Knesset members, or the same candidate did not form a government, or the government was presented and the Knesset did not trust it - the Knesset will dissolve before the end of the term, and there will be additional elections, fifth in number.
