The protest against the planning of the Brenner supply railway line in the Inn valley does not stop. The Federal Minister of Transport has now promised a feasibility study: It is being examined whether a neuralgic section could be laid underground.

The protest against the planning of the Brenner supply railway line in the Inn valley does not stop.

The Federal Minister of Transport has now promised a feasibility study: It is being examined whether a neuralgic section could be laid underground.

Munich / Rosenheim

- tractor protests, demonstrations, recently warning fire: The railway is in a difficult position when planning two new tracks between Rosenheim and Kiefersfelden. Most recently, displeasure about the planning of the "Wildbarren linkage" near Niederaudorf, where the tracks of the old - and the new line are to be merged - so that trains can switch between the sections.

Mayors in the region as well as the CSU and Free Voters in the state parliament have repeatedly called for the approximately 500-meter-long concrete structure with overburden structures and switches to be laid underground - otherwise, in their opinion, the disfigurement of the landscape would be too big.

Brenner inlet railway line: Scheuer commissions study

After the railway had refused to commission a study for cost reasons, the Federal Transport Minister reacted.

"I am happy to take up the region's proposal," said Andreas Scheuer (CSU) to

Münchner Merkur

(read on Saturday in the print edition).

He commissioned the German Center for Rail Transport Research in Dresden to carry out a feasibility study.

The DZSF (founded in 2019) is a research institute of Scheuer's Ministry of Transport.

"We want to find out whether and, if so, how a connection point can be implemented underground," said Scheuer.

He does not want to "miss a chance to increase acceptance for the planned route".

It remains to be seen whether the study will calm the mood in the region.

At the end of January, the government of Upper Bavaria completed the regional planning procedure.

This left four possible routes through the Inn Valley.

The favorite is probably the most expensive solution: a route that runs north-east around Rosenheim in a wide swivel, crosses or even crosses under the Inn and then leads south in long tunnel sections.

In a few weeks, the railway wants to announce which of the four routes it wants to apply for a building permit.

Brenner supply: the route may not be ready until 2040

Opinions also differ within the CSU about the purpose of the new line.

While Bavaria's Transport Minister Kerstin Schreyer and local representatives always emphasize that the requirement for the construction has not yet been proven and must first be determined through needs analysis, Scheuer makes a statement in an interview with

Münchner Merkur

: “There is no maybe and also no whether here . “The German Bundestag stipulated the need by law.

"Now it's about the how."

The possible date for completion is 2040. For comparison: the Brenner base tunnel between Innsbruck and Franzensfeste in South Tyrol is expected to be operational in 2028, but probably a few years later, according to an optimistic estimate.
