The Schönegger Käse-Alm continues to expand: The family business takes over the Wertach alpine dairy in the Oberallgäu district and has big plans.

According to a press release, the location is to be further developed and the production of an Allgäu specialty is to be brought back to life.

Prem - "The location of this traditional dairy is in the middle of our milk catchment area and also very centrally between our production facilities in Pfaffenwinkel and Vorarlberg," says Managing Director Sepp Krönauer, explaining his interest in the company.

"This proximity continues to guarantee short production routes and the sustainability of our products."

After the previous tenant left the company prematurely, the municipality of Wertach had been looking for a suitable operator of the Wertach cheese kitchen since the end of 2020.

“We took a lot of time and talked to over 20 interested parties,” said Wertach's mayor Gertrud Knoll.

In the Krönauer family, a partner has been found who equally fulfills the needs of agriculture, tourism and urban regeneration.

Production of the "white lacquer" returns to the place of birth

With the location in Wertach, the production capacities of the Schönegger Käse-Alm and the product range are to be expanded.

"We see a lot of potential in the Wertach Dairy, so we will invest in the location and develop it further," explains junior boss Katharina Übelhör.

In addition to other hay milk specialties, two original Allgäu cheeses are to be produced here in the future: the Allgäu mountain cheese and the white lacquer.

"Preserving these traditional cheeses is very important to us," assures Sepp Krönauer.

"I am particularly pleased that the production of white varnish is returning to its 'place of birth' with us." Developed in this cheese dairy and is hardly produced any more today.

Another focus of the takeover by the Schönegger Käse-Alm is the reopening of the Wertacher dairy shop.

This opens on March 31st and will in future be the flagship for all products - both for locals and tourists.

“Many citizens and our numerous guests are looking forward to this traditional shop opening again.

The cheese kitchen and the cheese shop are simply part of Wertach, ”confirms Gertrud Knoll.

With the takeover of the Wertacher Sennerei, the Schönegger Käse-Alm is continuing its expansion course.

The family business had already taken over the Reutte cheese dairy in mid-2019 (we reported).

Schönegger Käse-Alm GmbH, with its headquarters in Prem and 24 regional shops, is one of the first hay milk processors in Bavaria with 220 employees.

500 farming families from the Allgäu, the Bregenzerwald, the UNESCO-protected biosphere park Großes Walsertal and Tyrol deliver 50 million kilograms of milk annually, with a turnover of 60 million euros.
