Senior Israeli official: Palestinian Foreign Minister harms Israel - there is no reason for him to receive privileges

A senior Israeli source said this evening (Sunday) that the VIP status of Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki was revoked today and he was detained at the border crossing with Jordan because he is leading the Palestinian moves before the International Criminal Court in The Hague. "These countermeasures are consistent with the existing relationship between the State of Israel and the Palestinian Authority," the senior official said.

VIP status allows senior Palestinian officials to move without restrictions within the West Bank as well as into Israeli territory and Jordan.

Al-Maliki returned to the West Bank today after a visit to The Hague, during which he met on Thursday with the prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in The Hague Pato Bensuda.

During the meeting, al-Maliki asked the plaintiff to expedite the investigation against Israel, in light of what he defined as a continued violation of Palestinian human rights by Israel.

He stressed at the meeting that the Palestinian Authority would cooperate fully with the plaintiff and the tribunal.

A senior source noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had approved the sanctions against the Palestinian foreign minister.

"This is part of the basket of actions approved and raised in the preliminary discussions," he said.

According to Palestinian sources, GSS chief Nadav Argaman met a week ago in Ramallah with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and warned him of the consequences of Palestinian actions to advance an investigation against Israel in The Hague.
