Turkish police today (Sunday) arrested a lawmaker from the pro-Kurdish party at the faction's headquarters in parliament, where he barricaded himself for four nights in protest of his ouster following his indictment for spreading "terrorist propaganda."

Omar Farouk Gergerliuolo, of the Democratic People's Party (HDP) was arrested shortly before his morning prayer.

The party said he was in pajamas and slippers at the time of the arrest.

Gargerliuolo, a human rights activist, lost his parliamentary immunity last week, hours before a general prosecution in Turkey decided to act to close the party, the third largest in parliament.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government, which has been pursuing the HDP in recent years, accuses it of supporting the Kurdish underground (PKK).

The party denies this and claims a "political coup" against it.

The arrest of the MP, who was convicted of spreading terrorism after sharing a news item on Twitter, is linked to separate suspicions against him.

Police are demanding that he make a statement after alleged calls for support for PKK founder Abdullah Ochlan, who has been imprisoned in Turkey since 1999. Turkey, the United States and the European Union define the terrorist organization as underground.

Western countries condemn the move to close the HDP, while the Islamist ruling party, which holds a majority in parliament along with the Nationalist Party, condemns it.

Yesterday, thousands of Kurds demonstrated in Istanbul in a rally in support of the HDP.
