Some 18,000 residents have been evacuated from the Sydney area due to severe flooding off the east coast of Australia, after days of torrential rains flooding rivers.

Authorities said it was a "once in 50 years" event and called on residents to exercise caution.

The Prime Minister of New South Wales, whose capital is Sydney, said it was "a miracle" that no one was hit by the floods that hit communities affected by the fires and drought last summer.

"I do not remember a time in our history that we have experienced extreme weather in such a sequence, in the midst of an epidemic," said Prime Minister Glades Bregiclian, whose territory is home to about a third of Australia's 25 million citizens.

The Meteorological Service of Austria said the amount of rainfall, which reached 900 mm in some areas, was "abnormal" and extensive areas in New South Wales looked like the sea. Emergency services conducted at least 750 rescue operations, including people stuck in cars. In a helicopter.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has offered monetary compensation to anyone forced to flee his home.

Morrison was severely criticized last year, when huge fires devastated vast areas of eastern Australia, areas currently flooded.

This part of the continent is now experiencing the La Ninia phenomenon, which brings with it more rains and cyclone storms during the summer.

Scientists say that climate change is exacerbating the effects of the phenomenon, making weather patterns more frenetic.

"I've seen floods and things already, but I didn't have to go through them, so it's different," said Alan Rabin, a Jamestown resident who has described the floods as the worst in more than 40 years.
