Since the February 1 coup that overthrew civilian leader Aung San Suu, the country has seen daily protests violently repressed by the junta.

Some 250 people were killed, with more than 2,600 arrests, according to data collected by the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners (AAPP).

Opponents of the coup have decided to demonstrate day and night in an attempt to thwart the bloody response of the security forces.

Early Monday, protesters including teachers marched through Mandalay, the country's cultural capital.

Some held up signs calling on the UN to intervene.

On Sunday March 21, eight people were killed in this city and around fifty people were injured, a medical source told AFP.

In the evening, monks organized a ceremony with candles.

Automatic weapon fire could be heard in an area of ​​the city until around 11:00 p.m. local time.

In Yangon, the economic capital, demonstrations also took place early Monday morning in some neighborhoods.

Australia and Canada have confirmed providing consular assistance to a couple of Australian consultants, Matthew O'Kane and Christa Avery (an Australian-Canadian), under house arrest as they attempted to board a plane to leave the country on Friday. .

The foreign ministries of both countries declined to comment further.
