2021-03-22T21:43:37.202Z

The emirate is reviewing the working conditions of immigrant employees. The ILO approves, NGOs point out the gaps.

In Doha, the minimum wage jumped 33% on Saturday, reaching 1,000 Qatari rials (QR), or 230 euros per month and about 1 euro per hour.

Employers are also required to provide their employees with board and lodging or, failing that, a monthly allowance of 180 euros.

Since being selected in 2010 to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022, the emirate has launched massive public works.

A small country of 2.7 million inhabitants, of which only 300,000 are Qataris, it relies heavily on immigrant workers and makes them work in very difficult conditions.

According to the British newspaper

The Guardian

, at least 6,500 of them have died since 2010, which represents more than twelve deaths per week.
