The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, called for combating racial discrimination and ideas of ethnic superiority and eliminating the fierce "pandemic" of racism worldwide.
The United Nations News Center quoted Guterres as saying in a message on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, "Racism is dangerous, hateful and ugly and rife everywhere. Racial superiority is a malicious lie and a deep-rooted global evil that transcends generations, pollutes societies, deepens inequality, oppression and marginalization."
"Racism manifests itself in the pervasive discrimination suffered by people of African descent, in the injustice and persecution of indigenous peoples and other ethnic minorities, and in the hateful views of white supremacists and other extremist groups," Guterres added.
The Secretary-General stressed the need to condemn racism without reservation, hesitation or conditions, calling for joint action to rid the world of the evil of racism so that everyone can live in a world dominated by peace, dignity and opportunities.
Human rights and international organizations have repeatedly warned of the spread of racial discrimination, xenophobia, racial violence and the supremacy of the white race in several countries, including countries claiming their concern for and defending human rights, and these organizations called on state governments to take urgent steps to prevent racial violence, xenophobia and discrimination.
