With an underwater drone, the DLRG Pöcking-Starnberg wants to make diving missions in Lake Starnberg safer in the future.

The costs are high, the community wants to help.

Pöcking - The DLRG Pöcking-Starnberg plans to purchase an underwater drone that can dive right to the bottom of Lake Starnberg.

The volunteers around chairman Walter Kohlenz are currently seeking sponsors - also from the Pöcking community.

The DLRG had requested a grant from the community.

The drone and a location system for divers cost 48,000 euros.

In the meantime, a private donor has agreed to contribute 10,000 euros.

When Mayor Rainer Schnitzler asked what amount the committee would approve of a grant, Albert Luppart (PWG) jumped to the side of the DLRG.

The association is already successfully using a drone on land, or rather in the air, to provide help in emergencies.

The device will also be made available for rescue operations by other aid organizations such as the fire brigade and water rescue service.

The Vice Mayor pleaded for the DLRG to be provided with 10,000 euros.

Councils agree

Felix Erhard (PWG) reiterated the statement made by his group colleague.

The drone will provide valuable support to search for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts underwater before divers have to go looking.

The drone can also minimize the need for human rescuers to locate damaged boats.

The committee followed Luppart's suggestion without a dissenting vote.

The acquisition of the underwater drone, which is about the size of a medium-sized suitcase and can penetrate a cable to a depth of 150 meters (the deepest point of Lake Starnberg is 128 meters), is primarily intended to protect rescue workers and DLRG and other divers .

The drone can search areas - for missing persons or wrecks - without divers having to put themselves in danger.

She can also swim down search grids, and much faster than divers.

In addition, rescue divers are only allowed to a depth of 30 meters.

The drone should support, not replace, operational divers

The drone shows the rescuers on the boats or on land by video what is going on underwater - like the DLRG aerial drone from above.

“We want to bring water rescue forward,” says Kohlenz.

The drone is to be stationed on a vehicle, so it can also be used in other bodies of water.

“It complements the operational divers, but does not replace them,” explains the DLRG boss.

Thanks to a gripper arm, the drone can also be used for rescues or for mapping buoy stones.

The DLRG has also asked other municipalities for grants.

The acquisition of such a device has been an issue at the lake for years.
