Why refugees are prioritized for vaccinations

Many people are desperately waiting for their vaccination appointment.

This can also lead to envy - of those belonging to a prioritized group.

For example, refugees in shelters.

Munich

- Currently, people over the age of 80 and residents are vaccinated in Bavaria.

And people who are exposed to a high risk of being infected with corona due to their job.

In addition to the over-70s, the next priority group also includes people with serious illnesses or intellectual disabilities, employees of outpatient care services, police officers - but also people who are housed in large facilities.

These include homeless shelters, women's shelters and refugee shelters.

The vaccine is still in short supply in Bavaria, the brief suspension of Astrazeneca last week meant that many vaccination appointments had to be canceled.

As a result, there is growing concern that debates of envy could arise - especially because refugees should get the chance to get a vaccination earlier than most others.

Andrea Betz from the Diakonie München und Oberbayern is also worried - but she worries even more about what happens if refugees who live in accommodation do not get a vaccination offer soon.

“The risk of getting infected is particularly high in refugee shelters,” she says.

Several people share rooms, some of which are a few square meters, and dozens of people use the same kitchens, showers and toilets.

"In such a precarious form of living there are no protection options as in a private household," emphasizes Betz.

The hurdles to access vaccinations are very high for refugees.

Gülseren Demirel, asylum policy spokeswoman for the Greens in the state parliament

The past few months have proven this again and again.

There were corona cases in almost all refugee accommodation.

This resulted in the entire facility being quarantined each time.

Quite a few people were no longer allowed to go to work, and the children were no longer allowed to go to schools.

This is not comparable to any other living situation, emphasizes Betz.

She fears that the constant quarantine could cause even more asylum seekers to lose their jobs - and that children will lose touch at school even more.

Or that the residents of accommodation could be stigmatized.

"It would be terrible if children were to be avoided from accommodation in schools."

Gülseren Demirel, the Greens' asylum policy spokeswoman, also emphasizes: "The people in the accommodations are classified completely correctly in prioritization group 2." This would also reduce the number of infections in cities with large accommodations - and with it the incidence values, she emphasizes .

“It's in everyone's interest that as few people as possible become infected.” And the risk in the accommodations is particularly high.

Demirel is, however, already a step further mentally - and with that with the next problem.

"The barriers to access for the vaccinations are very high for refugees," she says.

The online registration is so complicated that it already poses problems for native speakers, there are no interpreters in the vaccination centers or on the hotlines - and the journey to the vaccination centers could also pose problems for many refugees.

The Greens have therefore submitted an application to the state parliament.

They are calling for mobile vaccination centers for all refugee shelters.

Not just as intended for the anchor centers.

"We have to make sure that language barriers are overcome and that the refugees are informed about the vaccinations," says Demirel.

The volunteers are not allowed into the accommodations during the pandemic and could not take on this task.

"If we want as many people as possible to be vaccinated, mobile vaccination teams are essential for the accommodations."
