British driver Johnny Dumfries, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and former teammate of Ayrton Senna at Lotus, has died at the age of 62 from a devastating illness, his family announced on Monday.

Born as John Crichton-Stuart, 7th Marquess of Bute, a Scottish island of 120 km2 and 6,000 inhabitants where his family's castle is located, Dumfries had decided to run under a pseudonym in order to hide his aristocratic profile.

Very gifted behind the wheel, he won the British Formula 3 championship in 1984 and then tested for Ferrari in 1985. He then joined the Lotus F1 team as a teammate of the young Brazilian Ayrton Senna.

He left Lotus at the end of a 1986 season when he had only reached the finish of a Grand Prix six times, with the best result a 5th place in Hungary, against an already very efficient Senna.

The name Dumfries, chosen as a pseudonym by the pilot, is that of a small town in the southwest of Scotland, in the heart of the county of Dumfries and Galloway.
