A decade into the Arab Spring that led to an ongoing civil war in Libya and the establishment of two rival governments in the East and West, a new unity government was formed this month.

The transition government is preparing for the elections that are expected to take place on December 24.

Last week, the unity government led by 'Abd al-Hamid Deviva swore in front of parliament in Tobruk, in eastern Libya.

This is an area that was under the militia control of General Khalifa Hefter.

More than 100 delegates attended the inauguration.

The new government was also sworn in before the Supreme Court in the capital, Tripoli, which was under the control of Islamist forces.

Today, the Eastern government officially handed over power to the new government, which will also replace the consensus government in the West.

The hope is that the government will put an end to the country's civil war and maintain a ceasefire between the parties.

Meanwhile, France will open an embassy in Tripoli next Monday to express its support for the new government.

The French president said they would do everything in their power to protect sovereignty and stability in Libya.

France closed its embassy in Tripoli after it evacuated 50 French and British diplomats when World War II broke out in 2014.

Since then the French ambassador to Libya has been sitting in Tunisia.

It should be noted that Heftar's men and the Muslim Brotherhood received low representation, with 61-year-old Prime Minister Deviva managed to maintain positions of power.

The government will be chaired by a presidential council headed by Muhammad al-Manfi.
