Fight against domestic violence in France: distribution of "violenceometers" on sachets of bread

2021-03-23T19:31:44.491Z

In November 2020, the city of Noisy-le Sec (Seine-Saint-Denis) distributed violence meters in bakeries, in order to act against violence against women. The Nous Tous collective is continuing this initiative throughout France in March.

Buying a baguette from a bakery can now be a committed act.

The feminist collective Nous tous sends bags of bread to the cities and the countryside on which a “

violenceometer

” appears

.

Nearly 3,000 volunteers distribute 615,000 sachets throughout the month of March in bakeries across France.

This large-scale operation aims to alert women to toxic relationships and the degrees of violence they can suffer.

Inspired by the original initiative of the town hall of Noisy-le-Sec, the president of the Nous tous collective, Laura Jovignot, launched a Leetchi fund in February.

The objective was to finance the printing of thousands of “

violometers

” on bags of bread.

She thus collected more than 33,000 euros.

"

The baguette, a common everyday object, can become a very useful and very strategic prevention support, in order to reach women victims of violence, even the most isolated

", specifies Laura Jovignot

.

This feminist collective, created in 2018, launched its awareness campaign, mainly on social networks.

On the ground, government resources are "

insufficient

", according to the president of the collective.

We cannot prevent and fight against violence against women if we do not put money on the table.

At the same time, the collective is also in contact with more than 80 town halls in France, "

interested

" in the system.

As for bakeries, they were chosen because they “

have the advantage of being so-called“ essential ”businesses.

It is one of the only businesses that does not close during this health crisis

, ”underlines the activist.

An awareness tool

On the front of the baguette bag therefore appears the “

violentometer.

"This measurement tool"

was created by feminists from Latin America.

In France, it has been adapted by the Hubertine Auclert center, the Île-de-France region, the Seine-Saint-Denis department and the En Avant All association

”, according to Laura Jovignot.

This colorful graph is used to measure the degree of violence within a couple, based on concrete everyday examples.

Depending on the toxicity of their relationship, victims can get help by dialing one of the emergency numbers mentioned on the back of the bread bag: 17, 115 or even Violences Femmes Infos (3919). .

The violentometer makes it possible to assess the degree of violence of certain everyday behaviors.

CENTER-HUBERTINE-AUCLERT.FR

On the violentometer, various concrete examples of behavior are presented.

They are classified into three categories, from the most "

healthy

" to the most toxic, even dangerous: "

benefits

";

"

Vigilance, say stop

" and "

protect yourself, ask for help."

"

Normal

"

behaviors

are green: "

respect your decisions, your desires or your tastes

" or "

make sure you agree to what you do together.

The second category, colored in orange, to vigilance in the face of attitudes such as "

blackmail you if you refuse to do something

" through "

manipulate you

" or "

isolate you from your loved ones.

"

The last red degree evokes “

harmful

attitudes

, such as manipulation, jealousy, physical violence, threats of rape.

Examples of reprehensible behavior by the law are given as an example on the

violenceometer

: "

Forcing you to have sex

" or

"threatens you with a weapon."

Thus, around twenty behaviors are described to bring about an "

awareness

of the victims."

A craze in the regions

All the French territory is covered thanks to a strong associative fabric.

From the smallest village to the largest city, 104 distribution groups have been formed on occasion and will go to bakeries in their neighborhoods, potentially reaching 1,850,000 people.

», Estimates Laura Jovignot.

Six overseas departments are also taking part in the action,”

she adds.

Contacted by Le

Figaro

, Clarisse, 48, midwife in La Manche is delighted with this initiative.

Responsible for Nous All 50

,

involved in the collective since 2018, she first participated in the pot before ordering bread bags from the association.

My department is very rural.

However, the countryside is more subject to silence than the city, especially on violence.

Thus, canvassing bakeries in the countryside can reach as many people as possible.

We did not limit ourselves to the city of Cherbourg.

Bread bags will be distributed in around forty bakeries in the department,

”she explains.

Domestic violence "

affects all ages and all social backgrounds,

" adds Clarisse.

Each year, 225,000 women are indeed victims of physical or sexual violence within their marriage.

Preventing and protecting women victims is more complex to date, since the start of the health crisis.

Yet women are more at risk.

There has been a 60% increase in reports of violence, due to lockdowns.

The second confinement further worsened the situation,

”deplores Laura Jovignot.
