The accident caused "massive traffic obstructions", as a police spokesman for the German press agency announced.
The traffic was temporarily jammed as far as Fürth.
In order to reconstruct the course of the accident, the police in Middle Franconia are urgently looking for witnesses.
At around 6 a.m., a 50-year-old drove a green Audi from Fürth on the Frankenschnellweg in the direction of Nuremberg.
He collided with a black Nissan almost unchecked at the intersection with Rothenburger Strasse.
The Nissan overturned due to the heavy impact with its 45-year-old driver and landed on the roof.
Both drivers suffered minor injuries in the accident and were taken to nearby hospitals for further medical examination.
Both vehicles were totaled, as the police in Middle Franconia * announced in a press release.

The police had to partially block the Frankenschnellweg completely for recording the accident and for recovering the vehicle lying on the roof.
This resulted in enormous traffic delays in the morning rush hour.

After the accident site was cleared around 7 a.m., this traffic jam cleared again, the police report said.
The Nuremberg traffic police have started investigations to clarify the exact cause of the accident.
According to the current state of the investigation, one of the two drivers involved in the accident has probably entered the intersection when it is red.
