A simple trip to a grocery store turned into a struggle for survival for many, Monday at a King Soopers in Boulder, Colorado.

Witnesses said a person entered the store in south Boulder and opened fire, killing 10 people, including a Boulder police officer, authorities said.

One person was taken into police custody and is in an area hospital for treatment for injuries sustained in the incident, Police Commander Kerry Yamaguchi said.

CNN affiliate KMGH's helicopter recorded a shirtless man being pulled from the supermarket.

The man had what appeared to be blood on his right arm and leg and his hands appeared to be handcuffed behind him as two officers escorted him.

The man was taken by ambulance.

One of the 10 fatalities was police officer Eric Talley, 51, who was the first officer to respond to the incident, according to Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold.

Here's what the witnesses saw, based on what they told CNN:

Inside the store in Colorado

Ryan Borowski told CNN's Erin Burnett that he was at the store to buy a soda and a bag of potato chips when he heard several loud knocks inside the store and started running.

"We just ran to the back of the store and out the back door and the clerks showed us the way," Borowski said.

And we told the employees what was happening.

So we all helped each other and ran to safety as fast as we could.

When asked if he could see where the shots were coming from, Borowski said: "I didn't see a shooter, I just saw terrified faces running towards me and that's when I turned around and ran in the other direction."

Borowski also said he never imagined being in a shooting in Boulder.

"This feels like the safest place in America, and I almost got killed for buying a soda and a bag of potato chips," he said.

Steven McHugh told CNN's Don Lemon that his son-in-law was third in line to receive the COVID-19 vaccine when the shooter walked in and killed the woman at the front of the line.

"They were there from the first shot to the last," McHugh said, adding that his two granddaughters were with their father at the store and were on the phone with their grandmother.

He heard about eight shots over the phone before his son-in-law grabbed the two girls and ran upstairs, hiding in a coat closet for 45 minutes.

"No family should have to go through this again in America," McHugh said.

"And nervousness and horror will accompany them for the rest of their lives."

Neven Sloan told CNN affiliate KMGH-TV that he and his wife were shopping for mushrooms and milk when he heard a bang.

I thought it was a bit strange.

I didn't know if it was like a gunshot or something else, but it was probably three seconds before we heard another one, like 'bang bang bang bang bang', and I immediately ran up to her and said, 'We have to get out of here', and opened the emergency door, "he said.

Andrew Hummel told KMGH-TV that he "heard a loud bang and then everyone ran to the back of the store."

"I did not see anything;

I could only listen… and I just ran, I just wanted to get out of there, ”said Hummel.

"So much was happening in such a compact area."

Hummel said that as soon as he left, he immediately called his parents and his friend and roommate Mason, who works at the store.

Hummel said his first priority was to make sure Mason got out safely.

He later learned that Mason was hiding in a warehouse with other customers.

“One of the scariest text messages he ever sent, it just said, 'I love you guys.

Thanks for everything in case things go wrong. '

That was a really difficult message, especially with me in this situation, ”said Hummel.

That's something I would never want to hear from any of my friends.

It was frightening.

It was really awful.

Outside the store

Jessica Crumby told CNN's Anderson Cooper that she was lying on a table in a tattoo shop that was in the same mall as King Soopers.

He said he heard about four shots.

"Suddenly we hear 'pop, pop, crack, crack,'" he said.

"We stopped what we were doing and heard some glass breaking."

Crumby said she went outside and saw that the window of a neighboring yoga studio "looked like it had been shot."

He also saw people running out of the King Sooper and heard sirens in the background.

Tactical police units respond to the scene of a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, after a shooting Monday, March 22.

At an apartment complex near the grocery store, a man named Ben was inside his apartment when he heard gunshots.

"I didn't think much about it because everything was muffled from my apartment," he told CNN affiliate KCNC.

He says he looked out the window and saw 40 or more police officers appear from all the surrounding cities.

He told KCNC that he saw 10 to 12 people being taken onto a bus.

"They took out a guy who had no shirt or pants and the entire right side of his leg was bleeding," he said.

"It's definitely very scary, I go there twice a week to do my shopping and I was about to go until I saw all the cops outside."

CNN's Steve Almasy, Paul P. Murphy, Kelsie Smith, and Melanie Whitley contributed to this report.
