Berlin - "The Brazilian mutant P1 is the greatest danger so far," warns SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach - "Unfortunately, it is also in Mallorca," he tweeted on the day of the latest federal-state consultations with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

It combines more contagion, mortality and partial resistance to vaccinations.

Is is a global threat.

Every outbreak must be consistently contained.

Unfortunately she is also in Mallorca.

Therefore tests are a must

The vacation trips to Mallorca in the middle of the Corona crisis continue to cause heated discussions.

The government's tourism commissioner, Thomas Bareiß (CDU), called it "bitter that we are making Mallorca possible", but hotels in Germany remain closed.

Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) told Deutschlandfunk: "All I can do is shake my head and say that it doesn't work at all."

Bareiß told the broadcaster Phoenix on Monday that the lifting of the travel warning for Mallorca "is something that really hurts us".

However, a trip to Mallorca is safe because of the incidence there of under 30 and a travel warning is no longer appropriate.

Bareiß advocates traveling to places where the incidence values are low and contactless travel is possible - especially in their own federal state.

"I believe that we can be more open when it comes to contactless travel, holiday apartments, holiday homes and campsites," said the CDU politician.

TUI Germany boss Marek Andryszak, however, defended the Mallorca vacation in the "Bild" newspaper on Monday: "Of the 1000 hotels that are open in midsummer, less than ten percent will be available at Easter."

For the travelers it will be "a quiet vacation - no parties, no free beer, and the restaurants will still be available for delivery service from 5 pm".

The Germans will meet only a few holidaymakers from other countries: "At Easter only the Germans will be in Mallorca, the British and many other Europeans cannot fly to the Balearic Islands," said Andryszak.

Great Britain is sticking to its strict travel rules, the British should not travel abroad until mid-May at the earliest.

Andryszak told the "Bild" that travelers on package holidays were not at risk when they returned to Germany.

Several studies have shown that guests behave responsibly on vacation and do not produce higher incidences.

"Nobody wants to risk that the beaches and hotels have to be closed again, hence the PCR test for entry into Spain."

SPD health expert Lauterbach, on the other hand, warned on Sunday on "Bild live": "We have had the Brazilian mutation on Mallorca for a week."

He appealed to everyone not to travel.

"And those who have traveled and come back have to be tested. That is the least one can ask when someone makes such a risky journey."

Lauterbach does not consider a quarantine obligation for all returnees from the Mallorca vacation to be necessary.

"Those who have been tested and are negative do not have to be quarantined because Mallorca is not a risk area."

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD), on the other hand, called for general quarantine after trips abroad on Sunday evening on ARD.

Müller said: "Of course it is so, when people from all possible countries come together in a holiday area, then there are contacts where new chains of infection arise and they are then brought back home. And that does not work."

Mallorca has not been a corona risk area since March 12th.

Bookings for the island immediately rose sharply.
