In the run-up to Pesach, Sachi youths got involved in packing food baskets for senior citizens • "The feeling is worth everything" | In Israel

In the run-up to Passover, Sahi youths got involved in packing food baskets for senior citizens • Dolev Assulin volunteered for the mission, two days before his enlistment in the IDF: "The feeling is worth everything"

The eve of the holiday will be marked at the weekend, but for many, including senior citizens and Holocaust survivors, it will be a sadder holiday - after the corona hit them financially and mentally.

However, there are those who volunteered to do good - youths who are members of the Sachi organization (a unique charity patrol) held an extensive distribution of food baskets to needy Holocaust survivors. Who also took part in collecting the donations to finance the operation, as well as in cooperation with the "Spring for Holocaust Survivors" association, which assists Holocaust survivors in exercising their rights free of charge.

One of the youths who have been volunteering at the Sahi for the past five years is Dolev Assulin, 18, from Tel Aviv, who will be drafted into IDF combat service in two days.

Despite the rush and preparations for recruitment, he found time to participate in the operation.

"I do not know how to explain the feeling you have when you give the food box," he says, adding that "this is the moment you realize your heart is in the right place. Every division you go out to is a new story signed in your memory."

Assouline says that a chance meeting with a neighbor led the organization to help her regularly.

He said, "This is an older neighbor who one day knocked on our door. Between the lines she said she needed it. I contacted the case to coordinate with us, and since then we have included her in the list of families receiving assistance. Another time I saw her she told me there was someone helping her. "To the door - she did not know it was me. For me it is closing a circle."

Avraham Hayun, CEO of the Sachi organization, said that "as always, the Sachi youth contributed to the success of the distribution operation.

Usually the distribution of food baskets to families all year round is done by the youth as a secret giving.

In the case of Holocaust survivors, our guys visited them in their homes, in part to alleviate their loneliness.

"It would be unthinkable for a Holocaust survivor not to be able to celebrate Passover in front of a table full of food."

Meanwhile, this year the venture to host homeless senior citizens in nursing homes will be renewed.

This is an initiative of the Ministry of Labor and Welfare, which aims to alleviate the feeling of loneliness.

After last year it was discontinued due to the corona, it is renewed and the accommodation will be made possible for senior citizens who will present a vaccine certificate or a recovery certificate (green mark).

Take care of the poor

The program offers homeless senior citizens a five-day stay in nursing homes that are in contact with the office, based on availability, in a room designed for two people.

Accommodation will take place in nursing homes where there is no concern about the illness of tenants and staff.

A person who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, and wishes to stay on vacation, will be able to do so after passing his details to the nursing home doctor, who will determine whether his stay in the setting can be allowed under the conditions to be determined.

For details and registration, you can contact the social services departments in the local authorities or through the Ministry of Labor and Welfare's hotline.
