Moscow-Sana

The Russian State Duma today approved a bill to implement amendments to the constitution giving President Vladimir Putin the right to run again for the presidency.

Russia Today reported that the draft resolution was submitted to the State Duma by MPs Pavel Krashinnikov and Olga Savastyanova as well as Federation Council member Andrei Klichas last November.

According to one of the new provisions in the Constitution of the Russian Federation, restrictions imposed on the number of periods during which one person can assume the position of President of the Russian Federation are applied to the current head of state without counting his previous presidential terms. Thus, this rule allows the current head of state to occupy the position of President of the Russian Federation for two more terms. .

In a related context, the Constitutional Legislation and State Building Committee of the Russian Federation Council announced the Council's intention to consider making constitutional amendments that would allow President Putin to run for two new terms.

The head of the committee, Andrei Klichas, told Sputnik today that the council will consider in its session on the 31st of this March the law applying amendments to the country's constitution allowing President Putin to run for two new presidential terms.

The Russian president announced in December of last year that he had not made a decision yet about running for the presidential elections in 2024.

A Russian public opinion poll conducted by the Public Opinion Study Foundation last November showed that more than half of Russian citizens trust President Putin.
